Studio News & Events

Hello everyone and greetings from M4 Studios! Summer is just around the corner and this spring certainly has been a season of reflection, renewal, and positive change. The most profound and significant event of this past season was the passing of Kirke's mentor and dear friend, John Glick. Kirke will share more on this later but for now wanted to pass on some reflections he had a few years ago when he was writing to inspire a new generation of potential apprentices to take on the experience of a lifetime with John at his Plum Tree Pottery Studios. Kirke's apprenticeship with John in 2000 and subsequent lifelong friendship was professionally and personally transformational. Kirke had a unique situation coming into the apprenticeship as John's wife, Susie, was Kirke's first ceramics teacher in high school and the person who inspired him to pursue a professional land personal life as a studio potter. The experience was invaluable on many levels and prepared him for what it takes to build, maintain, and succeed as a studio potter. Each day at the studio held new opportunities to learn or try something that he had not done before. Kirke wrote, "My education went beyond the studio, kilns, tools, glazing, photography, etc. I learned about personal maintenance, living out dreams, and relationships. It was great to be around John 5 days a week. He bounded into the studio almost every day with the energy of a 20 year old and his mind was always racing with ideas. He [was] an incredible craftsman and inventor and always willing to share this with his assistants. He was also a very caring and generous person." For the subsequent 17 years, John and Susie have been an integral part of our professional and personal lives, inspiring and supporting us in the pursuit of our dreams. We are adjusting to a world without him and will continue to draw inspiration and support from the legacy he leaves behind.

In M4 Studio news and a more uplifting note, Kirke has been busy in the studio creating a new series of multi-media paintings that will be on display and for sale at TomAndy Gallery. TomAndy also has new metal, furniture, jewelry, and painting work by a range of local artists. So stop on by!

Also, it's not too early to SAVE THE DATE for the 36th Annual Valley Craft Network Tour on November 18-19 2017. Kirke is excited to continue our participation in the great, seasonal event that supports local artists and artisans. We are also happy to be celebrating our 13th year here in western Maryland as a professional pottery and as a local small business. Our area is rich with history and artisan culture, click here for fellow local clay artists, and here for the Studio locations of our fellow Valley Craft Network artisans.

We also encourage you to visit Shepherdstown's Bridge Gallery where you can purchase pottery and artwork from other local regional artists.

We wish you all the very best and look forward to seeing you soon.
